Hi, and thanks for your interest! Dr Laurent here—clinical psychologist. Thought I’d just say a few introductory words about the kind of clinical psychology I practice.
My main therapeutic method is Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT is the most common and scientifically-supported form of therapy practiced among Western psychologists today, and consists primarily of modifying bad habits and reprogramming unhelpful thinking. I also draw from methods such as Existential Therapy, Mindfulness Training, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (if and when the current empirical evidence base warrants it). To read more about how I tailor therapy to specific psychological problems, see Areas of Focus.
Broadly, my aim is to provide a time and a space for you to confront and resolve your issues, whatever they may be, and an evidence-based technology with which to do it. I hope, ultimately, to inspire you to go after a life that really excites you, an authentic and meaningful life, not just a comfortable one. At times my role will be that of listener, but at times that of teacher, drill sergeant, interrogator, or simply travel companion—whatever you need in order to heal and thrive. There are very few guarantees in psychological therapy, and it’s hard to know what will work for whom; but one thing I can promise is that if first-line treatments don’t work, I’ll just keep on coming at the problem from different angles until something takes. I am extremely stubborn like that, and willing to do whatever it takes, within reason, to get you well.
